Her lungs are about to burst. The stitch in her side is like fire. She ignores the pain. They’re gaining.
She veers around a corner. Up a fire escape. They loose sight of her. She collapses against a stranger’s cold window, hyperventilating.
She’s sorry now. He said she’d be sorry. Said he’d make her pay.
“There she is.”
Adrenaline floods her throbbing legs. She climbs. Higher. Have to get higher. Feet pounding steel rungs.
Top floor. Locked door. Nowhere to go.
